Dist. Prof. Ratip BERKER (1944-1948)

Dist. Prof. Dr. Ratip Berker was born in Istanbul in 1909. Completing his high school education in Saint Joseph in 1926, Berker completed his higher education at Nancy University in 1930. Berker, who completed his doctorate at Lille University in France, was promoted to associate professorship at Istanbul University in 1933 and started to teach at Istanbul Graduate School of Engineering in 1934. Berker served as the first dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and chaired the Chair of Mechanics and Fluid Mechanics for many years.

Dist. Prof. İlhami CİVAOĞLU (1948-1950)

İlhami Civaoğlu was born in Istanbul in 1898. He completed his high school education at the French School and his higher education at the Faculty of Chemistry at Istanbul University. Civaoğlu, who started his career as an assistant at the Faculty of Chemistry of Istanbul University, worked in France between 1923-1927, and then transferred to the Istanbul Graduate School of Engineering in 1934. With the establishment of Istanbul Technical University, Civaoğlu was elected as the general secretary for two years, as the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering between 1947-1949, as the Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry in 1956 and as the Rector of ITU in the same year.

Prof. Melih KOÇER (1950-1952)

Melih Koçer was born in Erzurum in 1913. He completed his high school education at Saint Joseph High School. He completed his higher education at Istanbul Graduate School of Engineering. After specializing in Germany between 1937-1940, Koçer was appointed to the Istanbul Graduate School of Engineering in 1940, as it was then known. Koçer, who presided over many chairs with the establishment of ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, also served as the Dean between 1950-1952. Koçer was elected as Manisa deputy in 1954 and later worked in many official institutions. Koçer, who was elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences of Ege University between 1972-1974, also worked as an administrator in other higher education institutions.

Prof. Fikret NARTER (1952-1954)

Fikret Narter was born in Istanbul in 1911. He completed his high school education at Saint Joseph High School. He completed his higher education at Istanbul Graduate School of Engineering. After graduating, Narter started to work at the Istanbul Graduate School of Engineering and also assumed the position of associate professor and professor in the chair of Heat Technique. Narter also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering between 1952-1954 and as the Rector of ITU between 1959-1962. Narter retired voluntarily in 1964, worked as a specialist professor until 1970 and contributed to the industry as an executive consultant.

Prof. Hikmet BİNARK (1954-1956)

Prof. Hikmet BİNARK was born in 1918 in Ankara . Between 1937-1942 he studied at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Technical University of Dresden, Germany. In 1942, he received his Higher Engineering Diploma on Mechanical Engineering Engines Technique from Dresden Technical University in Germany. He completed his PhD in 1944. He worked as an assistant at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany between 1943-1945. He started to work as an assistant at ITU Motors Chair in 1945 . He became Associate Professor at the same chair in 1946. He was appointed as ITU Motors Chair Professor in 1953. He served as dean between 1954-1956. He was elected as the University Representative to the Turkish Constituent Assembly in 1961 and worked on the preparation of the 1961 Constitution. He was elected as the Rector of ITU in 1961-1962 due to the end of his term. He was a member of TUBITAK scientific board between 1963-1970. He took part in the commission that prepared the TÜBİTAK law. He worked in the establishment of the Gebze Research Institute affiliated to TÜBİTAK and was the first general secretary of TÜBİTAK. He retired from age limit in 1985.

Dist. Prof. Nurettin ÇUHADAR (1956-1958)

Prof. Nurettin ÇUHADAR was born in Istanbul in 1906 and completed his primary education in Istanbul. In 1923, he studied for 2 years at the Engineering School of that time, and in 1926 he started the Dresden Engineering School in Germany to study Mechanical Engineering. In 1932, he received his Mechanical Engineering diploma from the same school. In 1937, he did an internship at the German State Railways workshops. In 1938, he served as the Deputy Chief Inspector of the State Railways in Haydarpaşa. In March 1938, he was appointed as the Manager of the Istanbul Municipality Machinery and Industry Branch. In October 1939, he was appointed to the Istanbul Technical School Technology as a teacher . In 1940, he was appointed as Associate Professor of Technology at the Graduate School of Engineering. In 1946 and 1948, he established the Technology Chair, Metallography and Manufacturing Methods Laboratories. He was appointed to the Chair of Technology in 1950 . In 1954, he was appointed to the Director of the Institute of Materials and Manufacturing Methods. He served as dean from 1956 to 1958. He retired from age limit in 1975.

Prof. Fahri TERZİOĞLU (1958-1960)

Prof. Fahri TERZİOLĞU was born in 1922 in Balıkesir. He graduated from the French National Aircraft School in 1936. In 1982, he was appointed as an assistant to the ITU Mechanical Engineering Faculty, Heat Transfer department. In 1947, he was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Aircraft Construction at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ITU. There are various administrative duties he has taken throughout his working life. He was elected as a member of the Turkish Airlines administrative council and served as the dean for one term between 1958 and 1960.

Prof. Lütfullah ULUKAN (1960-1962)

Prof. Lütfullah ULUKAN was born in 1921 in Sinop. He graduated from Dresden Graduate School of Engineering in 1944. He graduated from ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1947. In 1947, he was appointed as an assistant to the Chair of Machine Elements . He became a Professor in 1967. He was the head of the Department of Mechanical Design and Manufacturing of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ITU. He served as dean between 1960 and 1962. He retired from age limit in 1988.

Prof. Teoman ÖZALP (1962-1964)

Teoman Özalp was born in Ankara in 1925. He studied in Ankara from primary school to the end of high school. He graduated from ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1948. He continued as an assistant at the same University. He became associate professor in 1954 and professor in 1962. He did practical work on ship models in Germany. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ITU for one term. He served as a member of the board of directors of Denizcilik Bank for 6 years, representing the government. He served as the Dean for 10 years at the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Marine Sciences at ITU, which was established in 1971. He was elected as the President of the GMO between 1964-1965 and served in this position for 6 years. He was the chairman of the board of directors of Türk Loydu, which was founded in 1978, for 17 years. He was the founder of the Eastern Mediterranean Countries Universities Maritime Association and was the chairman of this association for about 12 years. Istanbul Technical University awarded Prof Dr Teoman Özalp an Honorary Doctorate in 2000. Prof Dr Teoman Özalp has many published books, thesis studies and reports.

Prof. Aziz ERGİN (1964-1966)

Prof. Aziz ERGİN was born in Istanbul in 1922. He completed primary school at Galatasaray High School, secondary school at Ankara Turkish Maarif College, and high school at Ankara Gazi High School. He graduated from ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1947. He became an assistant to the Water Machinery Department of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1950, Associate Professor in 1954, and Professor in 1960. He was the Head of the Department of Water Machinery at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ITU. He served as dean from 1964 to 1966. He retired in 1982 at his request.

Prof. Saffet MÜFTÜOĞLU (1966-1968)

Prof. Saffet MÜFTÜOĞLU was born in 1919 in Marmaris. He graduated from Istanbul Erkek High School in 1937. He completed his higher education in ITU Mechanical Engineering Department. Saffet MÜFTÜOĞLU, who started his career at the THK Aircraft Factory, was appointed as an assistant to the Aircraft Materials and Elements Chair of the ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1950 . He completed his doctorate at TH Braunschweig in Germany between 1953-1957 . He became Associate Professor in 1953 and Professor in 1963. In 1944 Prof. Dr. Saffet MÜFTÜOĞLU worked at the USA Glenn Martin Aircraft Co. and at the John Hopkins University. Chosen as the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1966, Prof. Dr. Saffet MÜFTÜOĞLU died in 1968 as a result of an attack in a classroom.

Prof. Kemal KAFALI (1968-1970)

Prof. Kemal Kafalı was born in Istanbul in 1921. He completed his high school education at Kabataş High School for Boys in 1940. He completed his higher education at ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1948. He completed his PhD at Newcastle University Science Faculty in 1948. Kafalı, who started his professional life in 1948 as an assistant at the Ship Department of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ITU, later became an associate professor and professor of the Ship Construction Chair in the same department. Kafalı was appointed as the Director of Ship Institute at ITU between 1973-1984. He was elected as the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Vice-Rector (1973-1974), Rector (1974-1977, 1979-1981) and was appointed as the Rector of ITU by the President in 1981 according to the Law No. 2547. Kafalı, who was elected as a member of TÜBİTAK Science Board and TRT Election Board, also participates in many other boards. Kafalı has participated in research abroad in England and America and has been a visiting lecturer.

Prof. Hasan Fehmi YAZICI (05.06.1970)

Prof. Hasan Fehmi YAZICI was born in 1927 in Rize. He completed his high school education at Galatasaray High School in 1946. He completed his higher education at ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1951. Yazıcı was appointed as an assistant to the Water Machinery department of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ITU in 1951 and assumed the positions of associate professor and professor in the same chair. During his military service in 1956-1957, Yazıcı worked in the Operations Research group at the Scientific Advisory and Development Board and received his doctorate from the University of Paris between 1961-1964. Yazıcı served as the General Manager and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Turkish Sugar Factories between 1967-1969 and was elected Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1971. Yazıcı, who was also a member of TÜBİTAK Science Board between 1972-1980, joined the Turkey Delegation at the OECD Science and Technology Policy Committee. Yazıcı was appointed as the General Manager of TAI in 1974 and was also a member of the TÜMOSAN Board of Directors between 1976-1979.

Prof. Cahit ÖZGÜR (1970-1972)

Prof. Cahit ÖZGÜR was born in 1924 in Ünye and graduated from Haydarpaşa High School in 1941. In the 1941-1942 academic year, he attended Istanbul University, Faculty of Science, Department of Chemical Engineering and received Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics certificates. In 1942, he entered the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Mechanical Engineering School, and graduated from the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Istanbul Technical University in 1948 as an M.Sc. Engineer. After working as the assistant manager of Karayolları İskenderun Makina Group for one year, he became an assistant at Water Machinery department in ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1949.
After completing his military service in the Navy, he was sent to France and after doing his internship at EDF , he prepared his associate professorship thesis at the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of Sorbonne University, and became an associate professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1954.
Between 1957 and 1958, he worked as the Deputy Director at ITU Technical School. In 1958, he went abroad to carry out professional and academic studies and in 1960, from the Sorbonne of Paris University, earned the Dr. Eng. title. In 1963, he was appointed as a Professor at ITU. He worked in the R&D department of Dominion Engineering Works in Canada from 1967 to 1969, and taught Turbo Machines at Sir George William University. Between 1970 and 1973, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ITU. He was a TUBITAK Engineering Research Group Member between 1974 and 1978, and he was a member of the Agard Fluid Dynamics Panel between 1972-1976. From 1980 to 1991, he was the Head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Revolution History at ITU.
He also served as the head of the Department of Energy, Hydromechanics and Hydraulic Machines and the Director of the Energy Civilized Center at ITU. He retired in 1991. After his retirement, he taught postgraduate courses and worked as a consultant at ITU until 2009.
Prof. Dr. Cahit ÖZGÜR passed away on October 31, 2010.

Prof. Mustafa GEDİKTAŞ (1972-1980)

He was born in Istanbul in 1932. He completed his primary and secondary education in Istanbul and graduated from Vefa Boys' High School in 1949. In the same year, he entered ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and completed his 5-year Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and received the title of "Mechanical Engineer, M.Sc." in 1954. Following his graduation, he entered the Department of Machine Elements as an Assistant, and was sent to Stuttgart Technical University, Germany, in October 1957. He received the title of Dr.- Eng. in Stuttgart in 1961 and returned to Istanbul and resumed working as an Assistant in the Department of Machine Elements. He did his military service as a Technology and Technical Drawing lecturer at the Heybeliada-Naval Academy between 1962 and 1964. After completing his military service, he returned to the University and became "Associate Professor" in the Department of Machine Elements in 1966 and "Professor" in 1971. During his academic career, he gave lectures at ITU Faculty of Naval Architecture, Faculty of Mining, Faculty of Electricity and Karadeniz Technical University. He has published research articles, patents and translated books in his field.
He served as "Dean" at ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering between 1972-1980 and at ITU Faculty of Business Administration between 1983-1988. He served as the Director of the ITU Standards Center and as a member of the Certification Commission of the Istanbul Branch of the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) between 1974 and 1998, and as the Chairman of the University-Industry Relations Board between 1976 and 1980. He served as the President of ITU Automatic Control Institution between 1975-1977. He served as a member of the TUBITAK Advisory Board for a long time, a member of the Industrial Training and Development Center (SEGEM), a member of the Turkish Industrial Management Institute (TUSSIDE), a member of the Board of Directors of Takım Tezgâhları Sanayi A.S. (TAKSAN), and a member of the Advisory Board of ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. He served as the President of the Istanbul Branch of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers between 1972 and 1974.
He retired in 2000. After his retirement, he taught at Doğuş University for 2 years. He is married. He passed away on September 21, 2005.

Prof. Yaşar ÖZEMİR (1982-1991)

Prof. Yaşar ÖZEMİR was born in Gaziantep in 1931. He graduated from Gaziantep High School in 1950 and from ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1955. In 1955, he was appointed as an assistant to the Department of Agricultural Machinery at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ITU. In 1957, he went to the Institute of Agricultural Machinery at the University of Bonn, Germany, and received the title of Doctor at this university in 1960. Returning home after receiving his doctorate degree, he continued his duty as Dr. assistant. He received the title of Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural Machinery in 1966. He made research in Braunschweig, Germany in 1968-1969. He was promoted to Professor in 1971. He served as dean between 1982-1991. He retired from age limit in 1998.

Prof. Talha DİNİBÜTÜN (1991-1994)

Prof. Talha DİNİBÜTÜN was born in 1936 in Istanbul. He completed his secondary and high school education in Istanbul Erkek High School. He completed his undergraduate education at ITU in 1960 and his doctorate education at ITU in 1969. In 1960, he was appointed as an assistant to the Chair of Machine Elements at ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. He received the titles of Associate Professor in 1974 and Professor in 1980. Administrative duties he took throughout his working life were Head of Mechanical Engineering Automatic Control Chair, Deputy Dean, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Director of ITU Institute of Science and Technology. He served as dean for one term between 1991-1994. He retired in 1997 at his request.

Prof. A. Nilüfer EĞRİCAN (1994-2000)

Prof. Nilüfer EĞRİCAN was born in 1946 in Manisa. He completed his undergraduate education at ITU in 1970 and his Ph.D. education at Maryland University in 1977. In 1978, he was appointed as an assistant to ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Thermodynamics and Turbo Machinery department. He received the titles of Assistant Professor in 1982, Associate Professor in 1983 and Professor in 1989. Her administrative duties include honorary memberships during his working life, Phi kappa Phi , March 1974, Professional affiliations include American Section of International Solar Energy Society, Chamber of Mechanical Engineers of TMMOB. She served as the dean for one term between 1997-2000. She retired in 2002 at her request.

Prof. Mehmet DEMİRKOL (2000-2004)

Prof. Mehmet DEMİRKOL was born in 1953 in Ankara. He completed his undergraduate education at Boğaziçi University in 1976 and his PhD at ITU in 1987. In 1989, he was appointed as Assistant Professor to the Department of Machinery Materials and Manufacturing at ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. He received the titles of Associate Professor in 1992 and Professor in 1999. Administrative duties he took throughout his working life, he served as the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and as the dean for one term between 2001-2023. He retired in 2013 at his request.

Prof. Taner DERBENTLİ (2004-2010)

Prof. Ali Taner DERBENTLİ was born in Muş in 1948. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Manitoba in 1970, his graduate studies at the University of Manitoba in 1972, and his doctoral studies at ITU in 1980. He was appointed as a technician in 1973 and as an assistant to the Mechanical Department of ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Architecture in 1975. He received the titles of Lecturer in 1983, Assistant Professor in 1984, Associate Professor in 1986 and Professor in 1997. During his working life, he held administrative positions, Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, Director of ITU Institute of Science and Technology, membership in Faculty and University commissions, Deputy Dean of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and dean for 2 terms between 2004-2010. He retired from the age limit in 2015.

Prof. Ata MUĞAN (2010-2013)

Prof. Ata MUGAN was born in 1965 in Istanbul. He graduated from Istanbul Vatan High School in 1982. He completed his undergraduate education in ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1986. He received his master's degrees from the University of Michigan, Mechanical Eng. in 1989, Aircraft Eng. in 1992. He completed his doctorate in 1995 at the University of Michigan. In 1997, he was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ITU. In 2003, he was appointed as Associate Professor in the Mechanics Department of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ITU. In 2008, he was appointed as a Professor. He served as Dean between 2010-2013. He is still working as a Professor at ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Prof. M. Alâeddin ARPACI (2014-2020)

Prof. M. Alaeddin ARPACI was born in Gaziantep in 1954. He completed his undergraduate education at ITU in 1975, his graduate education at ITU in 1977, and his doctorate education at ITU in 1984. In 1977, he was appointed as an assistant to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Machine Theory, System Dynamics and Control at ITU. He received the titles of Assistant Professor in 1986, Associate Professor in 1991 and Professor in 1997. Administrative duties he took throughout his working life, Member of the Interuniversity Board (ITU Representative), PhD program executive committee, Graduate Program Coordinator, Faculty Board Member, Department Head, Department Head and served as dean for 2 terms between 2014-2020. He retired from the age limit in 2022.

Prof. Ekrem TÜFEKCİ (2020-2023)

Prof. Ekrem TUFEKCI was born in 1963 in Istanbul. He completed his undergraduate education at ITU in 1984, his graduate education at ITU in 1987, and his doctorate education at ITU in 1994. In 1985, he was appointed as a Research Assistant to ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Machine Theory, System Dynamics and Control. He received the titles of Assistant Professor in 1995, Associate Professor in 2007 and Professor in 2012. Administrative duties he took throughout his working life, he served as the dean for 1 term between 2020-2023. He is currently working as a Professor.

Prof. İlker Murat KOÇ (2023-Still)

Prof. Dr. İlker Murat Koç was born in 1974. He completed his undergraduate education at ITU in 1996. He completed his master's degree in Machine Theory and Control at ITU in 1998. He worked as a Research Assistant at ITU between 1997-1999. He completed his doctorate at Carnegie Mellon University in the USA, where he also worked as a Research Assistant between 2001-2006. In 2007, he received the title Assist. Prof. Dr. He worked as a Visiting Professor at INSA Lyon in 2008 and as a Visiting Professor at Imperial College London between 2011-2012. He received the title of Associate Professor in 2014. He served as Deputy Dean between 2014-2016. He received the title of Professor in 2019. He has been serving as Dean since March 2023.
